The region

The french Département Les Landes can be fairly easily described by four words: ocean, beaches, lakes and forest.

The holiday resorts on this southern part of the so called Côte d’argent (Silver Coast) which is located approximately 12 miles north of Biarritz and 100 miles south of Bordeaux are bounded by huge sand dunes and a great pine forest.

The miles long and very broad fine sandy beaches offer excellent swimming, sunbathing, surfing and fantastic beach hiking.

From most of the homes I offer the beach is within walking distance (100-2500ft). But not only the ocean but also the numerous sweet and salt water lakes are ideal for swimming. Especially children for whom the atlantic surf may sometimes be too strong will enjoy these lakes. But regardless whether sea or lake: all kinds of water sports are practised everywhere along the coast: wind surfing, water skiing, body boarding and first and foremost surfing. Once a year in september the surfing worldcup takes place in Hossegor and it is absolutely fascinating to watch these athletes how elegant they are sliding over the waves. Everywhere in the region you will find well-reputed surfing schools.

The resorts of Vieux-Boucau, Seignosse, Hossegor, Labenne und Ondres indicated on the map below have got perfect circumstances for hiking, horse riding and biking. North of Vieux-Boucau starts a paved biking trail which leads up to Arcachon 60 miles north. But also the small roads inland with few traffic or the huge pine forest invite you to do wonderful bike tours. The pine forest with its almost 2,5 million acres is the biggest forest in western Europe, a sea of tree tops which breaks against the ocean.

Since a couple of years the region has become a happy playground for golfers from all parts of Europe. Within 30 miles around Hossegor are not less than 11 golf courses out of which one, the Golf de Seignosse, has just been selected most beautiful course of France. Even  professionals consider it as a real challenge.

Furthermore, there is a variety of modern in- and outdoor tennis courts, as well as open air swimming pools with water chutes, wave and whirl pools. The somewhat more busy places like Hossegor and Seignosse-le-Penon with their numerous boutiques and restaurants also offer good shopping and nighlife throughout the year. In Capbreton, there is a casino which is located next to a shimmering little harbour with sailing boats and pretty yachts.

However, these coastal towns are in general very quiet places, especially in low season. In the nature resorts of Labenne and Seignosse, nature lovers and quiet seekers can observe hundereds of rare plants and animal species.   Ornithologists will love these backwoods, too -  just a few miles away from the beaches.

If you prefer a more chic lifestyle you should definitely visit the nearby city of Biarritz where even Napoleon III used to spend his holidays. Daytrips to the Pyrenees and the scenic Bask country are also highly recommended. The pretty city of San Sebastian in Spain can be reached within less than an hour by car. Northwards, the highest sand dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilat, as well as the  Bassin d‘Arcachon with its famous oyster farms are worth seeing.

I would be pleased to provide you more sightseeing and restaurant recommendations after booking.
